Gangulus
(added 4-19-09)
Description: Gangulus is a piece based on sound effects; the first samples used to construct this piece were the sweep sound heard at the very beginning of the piece and the explosion sound that follows it. From there, a melody was added using a synth sound from a Korg Triton keyboard; this is the main melody that is heard in various iterations during the choruses of the piece. Most of the rest of the piece was tracked using Propellerheads’ Reason software; Reason was used for the majority of the drums, bass, synths, and other effects in the piece. The piece as a whole is composed in three segments; an introductory section at medium tempo where the main synth theme is originally played, a slower middle section with a more laid-back feel and some delayed bell parts, followed by a faster finale section where the synth theme returns. One might consider the piece to be to be composed in something similar to the three-segment sonata form of the classical period in music, but it breaks from the conventions of this form in that the middle section does not expand upon the musical ideas introduced in the first section; instead, it introduces entirely new material. Then again, Beethoven was known to do the exact same thing in many of his sonatas. This may or may not be a coincedence.
